Business Productivity and Overhead Crane Safety
Overhead cranes are one of the most widely used cranes on the market, for many reasons. Their heavy lifting capability, increased level of productivity and safety factor make them a stellar addition to many business operations around the world. We have looked at overhead crane safety below.
Looking to take your business to the next level? An overhead crane could be for you; read on below for more details.
What is an overhead crane?
An overhead crane, as the more astute readers among you may have guessed, is a crane that operates overhead. Overhead cranes come in a huge range of sizes, with small mobile gantry cranes sometimes being referred to using this term, right up to the huge pieces of equipment that you see dominating places like shipping yards.
Generally, an overhead crane is manufactured from two vertical legs that support a horizontal beam. A lifting hoist is able to run along the length of this beam, meaning your overhead crane isn’t only restricted to lifting along one set vertical axis.

How can all of this help increase your business productivity and overhead crane safety?
Adaptable lifting movements
As we just touched on, an overhead crane is only restricted by the length of its horizontal beam. This gives it a much wider range of working, perfect for settings such as warehouses.
Heavy lifting capabilities
Overhead cranes are able to lift a great deal, with our range able to lift up to 50,000Kg! Just in case you aren’t sure, that’s a hell of a lot of weightage. This will greatly increase the productivity of your business by being able to handle a huge array of different loads that you need lifting.
By being overhead, the crane is built into the space above you that typically goes unused in many worksites. This keeps your worksite below free, allowing you to make use of this space in other ways to further heighten productivity.
Remotely operated hoists
Firstly, your overhead crane will be compatible with a range of different lifting hoists, allowing you to maximise productivity by using varying pieces of equipment for varying situations.
Secondly, the lifting hoists can be remotely operated by your workers, keeping them well out of the way of any lifting operation. This is obviously a big plus when it comes to overhead crane safety.
A range of styles
As with many other cranes on the market, there isn’t just one type of overhead crane. We stock:
- single girder cranes (a standard overhead crane)
- double girder cranes (uses two girders as opposed to the standard one, allowing for much heavier lifting loads)
- custom made cranes (bespoke and tailored to your specifications)
- underslung overhead cranes (standard overhead cranes run on the top of the gantry system, whereas an underslung overhead crane will run below. This is useful in areas where you may have a low ceiling)
As you can see, there are a range of overhead cranes suited to different situations. If you would like to discuss one of these in more depth, please give us a call on 01384 76961.
