There is more than one type of gantry crane on the market, and we offer both mobile gantry cranes made from steel and others made from aluminium. They are very different to other cranes that are on offer, such as overhead cranes, and come with their own unique set of benefits. But do these differing set of qualities mean that they can still be used in the same settings as other types of cranes? Below we have explored in more detail whether or not aluminium gantry cranes can be safely used in warehouses.

What is an aluminium gantry crane?

Before looking at whether or not aluminium gantry cranes can be safely used in warehouses, it is worth looking at the qualities that set aluminium gantry cranes apart from our other offering of cranes.

All aluminium mobile gantry cranes are lightweight and portable, making them easy to transport and assemble. With four handy wheels attached to the bottom, they can be easily moved around, and can even be moved with a load attached in some specific situations. Aluminium mobile gantry cranes also have adjustable heights.

What makes aluminium gantry cranes different from other mobile gantry cranes is, maybe not surprisingly, that they are constructed from aluminium rather than steel. This makes them a more lightweight alternative to their counterparts.


So can aluminium gantry cranes be safely used in warehouses?

Their lighter nature also means that they have a lower safe working load limit. Our steel mobile gantry cranes can lift up to 5000Kg in weight, while the aluminium gantry cranes can only lift up to 2000kg. This is still a great deal that they can lift, but it simply means that a steel mobile gantry crane is a stronger and safer alternative when working with heavy loads in a warehouse.

Alongside this, our aluminium gantry cranes have an adjustable height of up to 3.5m, while their steel mobile gantry crane counterparts can have a fixed height of up to 4.5m. A whole metre is quite a large distance when we’re talking about 3 or 4 metres, and so as with the above point, a steel mobile gantry crane is probably a more secure and safe alternative in a warehouse when compared to an aluminium gantry crane. Overhead cranes are a form of larger gantry crane, and are commonly referred to as workshop cranes, so should be your preferred alternative when it comes to wanting to use a gantry crane safely in a warehouse.


Does an aluminium gantry crane have any use in a warehouse?

However, this is not to say that an aluminium gantry crane has no use in a warehouse at all! As previously mentioned, aluminium gantry cranes are extremely light and portable, so if you are working in a warehouse where the most common item is below 2000Kg, then this will be the easiest crane to use.

Consider what the large majority of your stock is and how much space you have on your warehouse floor; aluminium gantry cranes may be the easiest crane to transport around.
