An overhead crane provides a great deal of benefits when it comes to heavy lifting tasks that need to be conducted in places like a warehouse or at a dockyard. It frees up space by being based overhead, and can easily move around between the space that it is installed in.  However, to make proper use of these benefits for a continued period of time and to make use of your investment, it is important to maintain the quality of your overhead crane. Below we look at some tips to increase you overhead cranes life span.

Do not lift more than your overhead crane is capable of

Each and every piece of lifting equipment has a working load limit (WLL) and a safe working load (SWL). The former is the absolute maximum an overhead crane can lift, and the latter is the safe maximum you should work with. One of the easiest ways to increase the life span of an overhead crane is to be sure to never exceed the product specifications when it comes to lifting loads. For example, our double girder overhead crane can lift up to 50 tonnes; should you need to lift more than this then consider purchasing another crane.

Be sure to store and look after your overhead crane properly

To further increase the life span of your overhead crane, it is important to store it in conditions that are conducive to keeping it working smoothly. For instance, leaving it exposed to water could cause rust, thereby shortening its life span. See the Materials Handling and Storage guide for more information on this.

Alongside this, check your crane thoroughly and regularly to ensure that your crane is still in a good enough condition for the task at hand. Putting your overhead crane under unnecessary strain if there is already damage can dramatically reduce its life span.

 Positioning your overhead crane properly

Before conducting a lifting task, ensure that your overhead crane is positioned correctly for lifting, and not at an angle. If it is positioned incorrectly, not only can it damage the overhead crane, it can also be a safety issue should the load swing in unexpected ways.
